Xhaka named as permanent Arsenal captain

Cape Town - Arsenal head coach Unai Emery on Friday named Swiss international Granit Xhaka as the club's new permanent captain.

Emery made the announcement at a pre-match press conference ahead of his side's trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Monday.

The midfielder has led the side in six of their eight games in all competitions so far this season, with Emery now making his decision official to hand Xhaka the armband.

Xhaka, who turns 27 today, on the day of his announcement as skipper succeeds Frenchman Laurent Koscielny who left for Bordeaux. With strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in the running to be named as vice-captain.
