Wenger weighs in on transfer market spending

Cape Town - Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger believes that spending exorbitant prices on players in the transfer market won't necessarily guarantee success, especially in the English Premier League.

The Gunners played to a 2-1 victory against the Major League Soccer’s All-Stars on Thursday, July 28 at the Avaya Stadium and Wenger took the time to comment on his near-rivals spending sprees in post-match comments.

"I personally believe that no matter what you do, it’s never enough," Wenger told reporters.

"In the Premier League, every club is hugely ambitious. With the cheques that everybody signs, it’s quite scary. But I believe we know what we have to do."

Wenger's comments come just days after Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis claimed the London club could not compete with their rivals' massive spending.

"We can't afford to outgun competitors that have far more money. We have to be very careful, very selective," Gazidis said.

"We would not be successful if we simply went out into the transfer market and tried to outgun our competitors.

"We're run in a self-sustaining way, and a way that we believe in, because we believe it gives us certainty for the future and enables us to plan our future with confidence.

"That means we can't afford to make huge mistakes in the transfer market. We can't afford to outgun competitors that have far more money to splurge on transfer fees than we do. So we have to be very careful, very selective about how we do things."

Thus far, Wenger has made three signings in the off-season transfer window. Granit Shaka was drafted in from Borussia Mönchengladbach for a fee of €45m, while Takuma Asano and Rob Holding arrived from Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Bolton respectively.

Wenger's side face CD Guadalajara on Sunday and will hope to garner the right preparation ahead of the 2016/17 EPL season to end a 12-year league trophy drought.
