Cape Town - Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend urged his team-mates to raise their level of performance in order for the club to retain their English Premier League status.
The Magpies are six points adrift of 17th placed Norwich City with seven games left in the campaign and the former Spurs man concedes his side face a huge task to survive.
"It's difficult to say what I thought would happen when I signed," the 24-year-old said in a press conference.
"Obviously, when I joined, there were a lot more games left and we were a lot more positive.
"But this is football, and this season, as you've seen, anything can happen. We're in the position we're in, and we need character now.
"We need the senior players to stand up and be counted, and drag us out of the situation that we're in."
