Tottenham down stubborn Villa

Cape Town - Tottenham produced a thoroughly professional performance to break down Aston Villa and claim a victory in their FA Cup tie.

Mauricio Pochettino decided to deploy a new 3-4-3 formation against Villa, with Vincent Janssen earning a start as the lone striker.

The Argentine will be worried about the Netherlands international's lack of impact since arriving from AZ Alkmaar in the off-season but would be pleased with the rest of the team, who made the most of their opportunities in the cup.

After a blunt first-half performance with Janssen failing to provide the movement needed in the area, the arrival of Dele Alli and Georges-Kevin N'Koudou sparked Spurs into action.

Seconds after coming on for Toby Alderweireld, N'Koudou swung in a lovely ball in from the left flank, and Ben Davies was positioned perfectly to head home the opener and his first goal for the club.

In the 80th minute, Spurs put the result beyond doubt with some silky one-touch football, with Son Heung-min getting on the end of Moussa Sissoko's cut-back to finish past Sam Johnstone in goal.

The young team looked comfortable after the second goal and managed to see off the tie with relative ease in the closing stages.
