Palace defender in serious M4 car crash

Cape Town - Crystal Palace defender Pape Souare had to be airlifted to hospital after he was involved in a traffic collision on the M4 motorway near Heathrow airport.

Reports suggest his life is not in danger, even though he needed to be cut out of his destroyed Mercedes G63 after a head-on collision, but he will need to remain in hospital while injuries to his thigh and jaw bone are treated.

"Crystal Palace Football Club regret to confirm that Pape Souare was yesterday involved in a car accident and taken to hospital in London," a spokesman for the club said.

"The player has sustained injuries to his thigh and jaw bone and will remain in hospital whilst he receives treatment.

"The club are liaising closely with the hospital on his progress," Palace confirmed in a short statement. "Our thoughts are with Pape and his family at this time."

Souare was not part of the team that claimed a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough this weekend, but did play all of the other three Premier League games so far this season and his extended absence will definitely be a cause for concern for manager Alan Pardew.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
