Cape Town - Manchester United have been linked with a move for AC Milan striker Krzysztof Piatek as they look to bolster their attacking power in the January transfer window.
Much has been made of the fact that United allowed their leading goal scorer Romelu Lukaku to leave the club in the summer without drafting in a replacement.
The departure of Alexis Sanchez to Inter Milan has also left the Reds short in the final third of the pitch and they are now weighing up targets to take the pressure off Marcus Rashford.
Rashford is expected to shoulder the bulk of the goalscoring responsibility, and so far, this season he is struggling to do so.
Anthony Martial has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, while Mason Greenwood is again too young to be expected to get United out of a hole.
Reports are suggesting that Piatek is the man the Red Devils want to bring to Old Trafford in January and are willing to pay £35 million to get a deal done.
The 24-year-old has a prolific record in Serie A, scoring 19 goals in 21 appearances for Genoa before making the switch to Milan, where he has scored a further 13 goals in 28 appearances.
Piatek has also chipped in with four goals in eight appearances for Poland, so it is easy to see why United are showing an interest.
The Rossoneri will fight to keep hold though and are under no pressure to sell as Piatek still has a contract with them that runs until the summer of 2023.
They are also struggling in Serie A this season, and the sale of Piatek would not go down well with the fans.
United do have other options should they fail to strike a deal for Piatek.
Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic and Lyon attacker Moussa Dembele are also said to be on the wanted list of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United return to action this weekend as they welcome old foes and current Premier League log leaders Liverpool to Old Trafford.
Kick-off is on Sunday at 17:30.
