Sancho sends light-hearted warning to 'fantastic' Van Dijk

Cape Town - Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho has issued a light-hearted warning to Liverpool centre-half Virgil van Dijk, saying he hopes to beat him in a dribble.

Van Dijk was named PFA Premier League Player of the Year earlier this week, having helped transform Liverpool's defence this season.

The centre-half has been key to the club's Premier League title push and run to the Champions League semi-finals, as well as Netherlands' progression to the UEFA Nations League semi-finals.

The Oranje face England in June, with the winner facing either Portugal or Switzerland in the final.

Dortmund winger Sancho fancies his chances against the 27-year-old.

When it was put to him that no player had dribbled past Van Dijk this season, Sancho told Sky Sports: "Nations League is coming up! I've been watching a lot of Premier League games and I've seen him.

"He's a great defender. He shows his ability on the pitch and that's why he's probably one of the best defenders in the world right now.

"It was either Raheem or Van Dijk who was going to win it because both this year's seasons have been fantastic.

"Their stats speak for themselves and they keep their teams on tip top."

Sancho also paid tribute to England teammate Sterling. "He's an inspiration to a lot of youngsters, especially because he's from London as well," Sancho said.

"I'm from London, so I'm sure every youngster from London will look up to him and be just like him one day and win big awards like that."
