'Reds need a striker like Lukaku, not Sturridge'

Cape Town - Former Liverpool forward John Aldridge believes the Reds need to move on from Daniel Sturridge and find a player in the mold of Everton striker Romelu Lukaku if they are to challenge for honours in the future.

Reds strikers Sturridge and Divock Origi has spent the majority of the seasons watching on the sidelines, as Jurgen Klopp has preferred Roberto Firmino in attack with Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho.

Since Sturridge has only found the back of the net four times in the Premier League so far, and Origi only two, Aldridge feels there is room in the Liverpool squad for another "out-and-out" striker.

"We need an out-and-out goal scorer," Aldridge, who won the Golden Boot in the 1987-88 First Division, said in a column published in the Liverpool Echo.

"Look across the Park at Romelu Lukaku. He doesn't give you a lot outside the penalty box but hey he's scored 16 goals. That's exactly what we need."

Firmino, Coutinho, Mane and Adam Lallana were all in fine form over the first half of the season, contributing the majority of the goals as the Reds looked like Chelsea's main rival for the Premier League title.

Since the turn of the year, though, the Reds have struggled for in front of goal and although Sturridge hasn't had much opportunity to impress Klopp, Aldridge is convinced his former club needs to look elsewhere.

"When we had four players all scoring it was great but you need your match-winner up front," Aldridge continued in his column with the Echo.

"Tottenham have got Harry Kane. He's been through a lean spell but has come through it with flying colours and that shows his strong mental attitude to prove people wrong."

Klopp's men will be looking to reverse their poor form when they welcome title rivals Tottenham Hotspur to Anfield on Saturday in a Premiership clash.

Kick off is at 19:30.
