Redmond sending off was harsh, says Puel

Cape Town - Southampton manager Claude Puel felt the decision to send off Nathan Redmond and award a penalty in their 4-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur was harsh.

Spurs were 2-1 up when Redmond was dismissed for hauling down Deli Alli, and while the decision to hand the player a red card for being the last defender appeared legitimate, with the foul having started outside the box, questions have been raised as to why a spot-kick was awarded.

Harry Kane went on to miss the penalty but with the bonus of an added player, Spurs added two further goals to ultimately seal a comprehensive win

After the match, a downbeat Puel said the decision was "hard" as Redmond stumbled into Alli rather than deliberately or maliciously  bringing him down.

He said: "I think it's a little hard because he didn't want to make a fault, he just touched the player.

"It is two players trying to win the ball. It is difficult to accept because of course, it changes the philosophy of the game.

"After, it was finished. Against a team with this quality, good possession and great players, it was difficult for us."
