Cape Town - Veteran Swansea defender Angel Rangel is set for a spell on the side-lines after undergoing surgery on his troublesome groin this week.

The Swans captain has been used sparingly this season, making just three Premier League appearances and another three in the EFL Cup.

Rangel last featured in the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham on January 2 when he was handed a rare league start, and the 35-year-old right-back went under the knife on Monday to remedy the problem.

"Swansea City skipper Angel Rangel is expected to return to first-team training in six weeks following successful surgery," a statement from the club read.

"The Spaniard went under the knife in London on Monday to cure a groin problem, and he is set to play a part in the club's Premier League run-in after the successful procedure."

Rangel is in his 11th season at the Liberty Stadium and helped the Welsh outfit win two promotions to get into England's top flight, where they have played since 2011/12.

The Swans next face Sheffield Wednesday in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday at the Hillsborough Stadium.

Kick-off is at 14:30 (SA time).
