Pires admits Sanchez uncertainty over new deal

London - Robert Pires has revealed that Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez is not sure about signing a new contract with club, saying the player only wants to play.

Sanchez has been the Gunners' star man this season, scoring 17 goals as Arsenal sit second on the Premier League table and progressed into the Champions League last 16.

His importance to the team was underlined on Sunday when he slotted a penalty in the dying seconds of the game to give Arsenal a 2-1 victory over Burnley.

The Chile international has however stalled on signing a new deal at the Emirates Stadium, with his contract expiring in June 2018.

Pires, who is a coach at the London club, told La Tercera: "I asked Alexis last week about his renewal. He told me that he didn't know, that he only wants to play.

"He doesn't know what is going to happen, he just wants to play and enjoy it.

"All we want is for Alexis to stay at Arsenal. I hope he re-signs because he is a wonderful player, the engine of the car. I hope he stays forever."

Sanchez has often cut a frustrated figure in recent weeks with the Chilean arguing with team-mates and storming off after a 3-3 draw to Bournemouth and sulking on the bench after being taken off by Arsene Wenger.

Wenger though said that he has no problems with Sanchez's attitude labelling the outbursts as passion for winning.
