PICTURE: Premier League reveal 2019/20 season ball

Cape Town - The Premier League and sports apparel company Nike has revealed the official 2019/20 season ball called 'The Merlin'.

The heavy technology infused ball has elements which could mean more goals for the upcoming campaign.

"Last season's ball hit the back of the net a record 1,072 times for a 20-team PL season, and in 2019/20, that number could be even higher thanks to Nike's latest innovations," the statement read on the official Premier League website.

"The ball comprises just four fuse-welded panels to provide a bigger "sweet spot" for ball striking.

"It has heightened visual clarity for players and spectators thanks to the new graphic layout and striking colour combinations.

"The Nike 'Aerowtrack' grooves on the ball will ensure a more consistent flight, while Urban Grip, an updated version of Nike’s All Conditions Control (ACC) technology, will give enhanced traction whatever the surface or weather."

Meanwhile, last week Thursday the Premier League unveiled the 2019/20 season fixtures which caused an uproar among fans.

The opening weekend sees 2018/19 runners up Liverpool start their season at home to newly-promoted Norwich on Friday, August 9.

Meanwhile, champions Manchester City kick-off their campaign at West Ham United while Tottenham welcome Premier League returnees Aston Villa to their fancy new stadium.

Newcastle United entertain Arsenal on Sunday while the pick of the weekend will see Chelsea travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United.
