Nick Pope extends Clarets stay

Cape Town - Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope has been rewarded for his fine start to the season with a new contract that ties him to the Premier League club until 2020.

The 25-year-old joined the Clarets in 2016 from Charlton, but had to wait 14 months to make his top-flight bow after coming on for the injured Tom Heaton against Crystal Palace on September 10.

Pope has benefitted from Heaton's misfortune, keeping two clean sheets in his next three league starts for Sean Dyche's side, who are sitting pretty in sixth position.

Dyche is delighted to secure the long-term future of the Ipswich youth product, who penned a one-year extension to his previous deal that still had two years to run.

"We were already in discussions with Nick before he had the chance to start the games he has done recently and we're pleased they have been finalised," Dyche told the club's official website.

"He had been working hard to continue his development out of the team. He is continuing that since he got into the side and we look forward to him progressing further as an important member of the squad."

Pope added: "I'm delighted to sign a new contract and extend my stay here. I've been really happy since I signed last year, so I'm really pleased to get it done.

"We are still growing as a club and I'm growing as a player. That's what I wanted to do when I first signed."
