Mourinho names 'unimportant' United skipper

Cape Town - Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he will most likely give experienced campaigner Antonio Valencia the armband for the upcoming season.

Valencia captained the Red Devils in all 39 of the matches he started last season, after appointed captain Michael Carrick missed most of his final season at the club due to injuries.

Mourinho has stated that he will probably stick with Valencia as captain for the 2018/19 season, but also added that the captaincy isn't all that important in his view.

"The captain was Valencia last season, and I think he's going to be the captain," Mourinho told the press after United's 1-1 draw with Club America in Arizona, USA.

"When he doesn't play, we have to make decisions.

"It depends on who is on the pitch. If (Chris) Smalling is, Ashley Young is, if (Ander) Herrera is or (Juan) Mata is, if they are on the pitch they have an option.

"(Nemanja) Matic has all the attributes to be Manchester United captain, but he arrived only one year ago.

"But I never care much about the captaincy, I care more about the life in the dressing room and the leaders. The armband means what it means."
