Cape Town - It has been a tough seven years for Manchester United, and to make matters worse, their arch-rivals Liverpool are on the brink of claiming their first Premier League title in three decades.

The Red Devils last won the Premier League in Sir Alex Ferguson's final season (2012/13) - claiming it for a record 20th time - before he shocked the football fraternity by announcing his retirement.

Since then, it has been a downward spiral for United, with only the odd piece of silverware - Community Shield (2016), FA Cup (2015/16), League Cup (2016/17) and Europa League (2016/17).

Three managers later, United are now under the tutelage of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and currently fifth in the league table.

United's most recent two defeats - 2-0 against Liverpool at Anfield and then an embarrassing 2-0 loss to Burnley at Old Trafford - were the final straw for many fans.

Chants and boos echoed around the 76 000-seater stadium with vice-executive chairperson Ed Woodward and club owners, the Glazers, receiving the majority of the stick.

We asked Sport24 readers to share their views on Facebook, putting forward three possible scenarios:

Solskjaer out, Woodward out or Glazers out?

This was the response ... with added football banter of course!

Eddie Jongwana: For the past seasons Manchester United is the gorgeous woman you date whom you know uyakfebela yet you stay, you catch her come out a house of a construction worker dude with the construction bakkie outside but you stay and lastly she even admits to chowing a friend and how it was a mistake yet you stay?? so again I'll stay take the endless heartbreak on to the next one because I'm blindly inlove nalo doti we team because of the goodtimes we shared especially in the 90s

Lunga Vado Dameni: All 3 out. They have absolutely no idea what they are doing. Absolute thrash

Nicoleen Murray: Defence has been a problem for a few years now. We need a Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister type defenders. Mata is the only one bringing a bit of magic.

Terry Naidu: Ole must stay and continue his brilliant work.

Sphah Mkhonzeni Sibal'khulu: Mxm this one reminds me u Steve Mphathi Khompela

Luciano Nobrega: The biggest problem at man utd is not replacing the experience players that left and trying to replace them with the younger players.

We also asked our readers to vote in a poll on Twitter:

Manchester United have been experiencing a torrid time not only on the field, but off it as well. What should the club's next move be?

This was the result:

Fans want the former United striker to be axed in order for the club to move forward with 29% of the voters opting for Solskjaer's exit.

Woodward received the second most votes, with 25% urging the club to fire the man who replaced David Gill in 2013 while 24% want club owners, the Glazers, to sell the club to the highest bidder.

The remaining 22% were content to give the club more time.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils are back in action this weekend on Sunday against Tranmere in an FA Cup fourth round encounter.

Kick-off is at 17:00 SA time.
