United fans organise plane banner to protest against Woodward

Cape Town - Manchester United fans have scheduled a protest banner against Ed Woodward, calling for the Glazer family to sack the executive vice-chairman.

According to the Telegraph website, the banner will be flown over Turf Moor Stadium when the Jose Mourinho-managed side clash against Burnley on Sunday, September 2.

The UK publication further states that the message on the banner will bear the words "Ed Out - LUHG" - which means Love United, Hate Glazer.

In March 2014, United supporters pulled-off a similar tactic as the plane flew a banner over Old Trafford with the message "Wrong One - Moyes Out" in a bid to get David Moyes sacked.

United fired the Scotsman the following month.

Despite signing midfielder Fred (£52m) and right-back Diogo Dalot (£19m), Woodward's position at the club has come under scrutiny following United's failure to bring in fresh faces during the transfer window.

Mourinho was eager to bulk up his defence with England international Harry Maguire and 29-year-old Toby Alderweireld from Premier League contenders Tottenham Hotspur.

The Portuguese-born manager was vocal during United's pre-season about the club bringing in players to better their chances in claiming their first Premier League title in six years.

With the Premier League season in full swing, former United captain Gary Neville instead backed Mourinho and blasted Woodward after the Red Devils suffered an embarrassing 3-2 defeat against Brighton at the Amex Stadium last week.

“It’s painful to think how it’s played out these last five or six years,” Neville said, who believes the Woodward should have backed Mourinho in the transfer window.

“If Ed Woodward was going to doubt Jose Mourinho, then the time to be doubting him was last January.

“The minute he gave Jose Mourinho a contract extension - which some would say was unnecessary part way through a season – he had to then buy him the centre-backs.

“He had to get him Maguire, he had to get him Alderweireld, because they wouldn’t have made those mistakes (at Brighton).”

Meanwhile, Mourinho face a stern test on Monday, August 27 when United welcome Tottenham to Old Trafford.

Kick-off is at 21:00 (SA time).
