Lucas Torreira in tears as Xhaka booed by Arsenal fans

Cape Town - Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira was visibly saddened to see captain Granit Xhaka booed off the pitch by his own supporters in a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Gunners dropped two valuable points as they let a two-goal lead slip against their London rivals as Unai Emery's side failed to clinch a win in back-to-back Premier League fixtures.

Torreira was in tears and inconsolable as Granit Xhaka shouted angrily at Arsenal fans to "f**k off" as they booed him off the pitch when substituted.

That's according to Arsenal's chief photographer Stuart McFarlane, who snapped the Uruguayan as he watched the Gunners captain being jeered.

"Didn't want to post these pictures, but felt I had to," McFarlane tweeted. "This is Lucas Torreira's emotional reaction to the abuse Granit Xhaka received after his substitution, in tears and inconsolable. Absolute love and respect for his captain."

Meanwhile Arsenal head coach Unai Emery refused to confirm Xhaka will remain as captain after admitting the Swiss star was wrong to become embroiled with Gunners fans.

"He was wrong. I want to be calm but, really, he was wrong in this action," Emery said.

"We are working with the players to play under pressure. In a difficult moment you can be hot. You have to be clever.

"We play for the supporters. We need to have a lot of respect for them when they are applauding us and when they are criticising us."
