Lingard backs Martial to become a force this season

Cape Town - Jesse Lingard believes Manchester United team-mate Anthony Martial has the ability to cut through defences this season, after his impressive display against Burton.

Jose Mourinho's side thrashed the Brewers 4-1 on Wednesday in their EFL Cup third-round clash and Martial came away with the man-of-the-match award for scoring a goal and providing an assist.

Lingard has backed the 21-year-old forward to become a serious threat to opponents this term, if he continues playing the way he did in midweek.

"When he is running at you, any defender is going to be put on the back foot. If he continues to do that throughout the season, he'll be a force this season," the United youth product quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

"I thought we dominated the game throughout. With the pace we had up front, we pressed them early on and the early goal helped us a lot.

"It puts them on the back foot and starts us off on the front foot and we wanted more goals after that."

Mourinho's men next face a trip to the St. Mary's Stadium to face Southampton in an English Premiership clash on Saturday.

Kick off is at 16:00.
