Cape Town - Tottenham reportedly tried to bring in Brendan Rodgers as Mauricio Pochettino's replacement before opting to hire Jose Mourinho.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United boss has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the north London club, with the appointment coming less than 12 hours after Spurs parted company with Pochettino on Tuesday evening.
On joining Spurs, 56-year-old said: "I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters.
"The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me."
Mourinho, who won three Premier League titles in two spells with Chelsea, had been out of management since leaving United in December last year.
However, the Daily Mail claims that 'Brendan Rodgers was Tottenham's first choice' to take over from Mauricio Pochettino.
The report adds: 'Levy enquired about Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers but was told prising him away from the King Power Stadium would be impossible so turned to Jose Mourinho.'
