Klopp urges Liverpool players to 'stay greedy'

Cape Town - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has urged his players to "stay greedy" as they look to build on what was a successful 2018/19 campaign.

Liverpool were pipped to the Premier League title by Manchester City but the Merseysiders went all the way in the Champions League, defeating domestic rivals Tottenham 2-0 in the Madrid final in June.

While that night in the Spanish capital and the aftermath are special memories for Klopp, the Liverpool manager insists they will not dull his side's hunger as they pursue further honours this season.

Asked what they need to do to build on their success, Klopp told uefa.com: "Stay greedy. That's very important - I have no doubt about that, but it's clear that we have to do that."

Liverpool looked hungry enough as they got their quest for a first domestic title in 20 years up and running with a 4-1 win against Norwich City at Anfield on Friday night.

Despite the convincing scoreline, the Reds took their foot off the pedal when 4-0 up at the interval and Norwich were unfortunate not to add more than Teemu Pukki's second-half consolation.

Klopp accepts there are some things they will have to do better this season, but he also feels his current squad have what it takes to win more silverware on the back of last season's success.

He added: "Knowing that something works out helps you to believe that it'll work out again, 100 per cent."

The German tactician was speaking in the build up to Wednesday's trip to Istanbul to face Europa League winners Chelsea in the Super Cup.

While the Reds romped to victory against Norwich, Frank Lampard's first league game in charge of the Blues ended in a 4-0 drubbing against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The west Londoners are in the middle of a two-window transfer ban and have lost star man Eden Hazard to Real Madrid this summer, while experienced defender David Luiz moved to rivals Arsenal ahead of last Thursday's deadline.

As a result, Klopp is not sure what to expect from the opposition. However, from a personal point of view, he is keen to win the trophy given he has just missed out on playing in this game in recent seasons.

He added: "The Super Cup itself is not a cup that I've really loved to watch in the past because I was often (the beaten finalist in the Champions League or Europa League).

"The Super Cup is obviously the final proof; if you are not in that game, it means you didn't win the final. That's completely different this year, so we're looking forward to it. It's a big one."
