Cape Town - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes Financial Fair Play is important in the modern game and any club who transgresses the rules must be punished.

Manchester City have come under close scrutiny in recent weeks with Der Spiegel alleging the wealthy outfit struck a secret deal with UEFA in 2014 to avoid a Champions League ban for a breach of FFP regulations.

The publication alleges that owner Sheikh Mansour 'supplemented' the team's sponsorship deals in order to not breach the regulations.

The Citizens then came out and said the allegations were a 'organised and clear attempt' to damage the side's reputation.

In addition, Paris Saint-Germain are also said to have done a similar thing in terms of inflating sponsorship revenues to comply with FFP.

Klopp told reporters that while he had not read the reports, he agreed that FFP is of value, saying: "It is really difficult to comment but what I can say in general is that FFP is a really good thing.

"But we always thought that, if it is in place, they have to do something with it. I have no clue what happens. I know it is about Paris and Man City. I'm not sure if other clubs are being talked about.

"I think FFP is a really good thing because it sets the rules. If everything is fine, then everything is fine.

"If not, then somebody should do something. That's all I can say but I have no clue about the real story."
