Klopp allays Sturridge injury fears

Cape Town - Liverpool fans were given further good news after Reds boss Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Daniel Sturridge didn't sustain an injury during Friday's 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

The Merseysiders were magnificent for large parts of the weekend's opening Premier League encounter, but the victory might have been a bittersweet one after former Blues striker Sturridge was Divock Origi after 12 minutes of the second half and appeared to walk straight down the tunnel at Stamford Bridge.

Klopp, though, dismissed any speculation over Sturridge's fitness, insisting the substitute was a purely tactical one.

"I couldn't see that he could sprint anymore, so that's why we had to change. We had a healthy, young striker on the bench. That's all," Klopp told the media after the match.

"The first half was really good - really good - from Daniel. We need this player there in the centre who we can play with and if there's a ball behind the line sometimes, so that we can go there and can push up in the last line.

"I don't think there is an injury, it is only the situation. Nobody told me about an injury, so all is good."

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
