Ince points finger at Woodward for United troubles

Cape Town - Manchester United legend Paul Ince has put the blame for the club's woes firmly at the door of vice-chairman Ed Woodward for not doing enough to strengthen the squad.

Former United midfielder Ince, who played at Old Trafford from 1989-1995, has ripped into the Woodward for his running of the club and his poor handling of the squad in terms of investment.

In regards to spending money, United have never been shy in the transfer market and they spent over £140 million on three players this summer, adding Harry Maguire, Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to the ranks.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 the 20-time English champions have shelled out £946 million in transfers but they have failed to add another league title to their collection, with the last coming in the 2012/13 campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently in charge of United, the fourth different manager to get the job permanently since Ferguson’s departure, and the former striker is finding life tough at the moment.

The Red Devils lost 2-0 at West Ham United on Sunday, a result which leaves the red side of Manchester eighth in the Premier League and a massive 10 points behind leaders Liverpool, who overcame Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.

Ex-England international Ince, who won seven major trophies during his time at the Theatre of Dreams, including two PL titles, has now launched an attack on Woodward for letting the squad strength slip away over the years.

"I'm more concerned about the director of football situation and the way Ed Woodward is building the club," he was quoted as saying by The Mirror.

"They (the fans) want Manchester United-quality players on the pitch, to be entertained, to be winning things, and they’re not getting that.

"It doesn't look like a United team anymore. The fans at United are unbelievable, they'll get behind the team no matter what. But they deserve so much more."

United return to action on Wednesday when they play host to Rochdale in the EFL Cup third round before then going up against Arsenal on Monday evening at Old Trafford.
