Cape Town - Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels has revealed that he was 'very close' to signing for Manchester United.
The 27-year-old was linked with a move to Old Trafford in 2014 when he was at Borussia Dortmund and Louis van Gaal was in charge at United.
However, Hummels stayed on at Dortmund for another two years before making the switch to Die Roten in the off-season.
"Yes, [a deal was close]," Hummels told the Daily Mail. "Yes, yes, yes. It was close. Very close.
"There were talks, several times in the last few years. They were the offers. I had England or one of the three big Spanish clubs.
"The Spanish interest was loose, loose offers. I don't like it that way. Nothing got close like the one from England.
"Van Gaal wanted me but he wasn't the only one. It is getting difficult for me now to play in England. I'm 28 next month and I've signed here for five years."
The German defender also is taking an interest in the media coverage Wayne Rooney has faced and defended Rooney who almost became his team-mate by saying that Rooney had been at the top-level for more than 12 years and can't always be performing at his best.
