Herrera backs Mourinho's 'defensive' approach

Manchester - Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has voiced his support for manager Jose Mourinho, speaking out against those who claim he is too defensive.

The Red Devils boss has come under fire for his seemingly conservative style of play, in which he seems to prefer to play without the ball.

However, Herrera believes the criticism is unfounded, and that Mourinho's measured approach does not mean he is defensive-minded.

"There's an idea of Mourinho that's flawed," Herrera told The Guardian. "In many games we've had more possession. Liverpool had more [in a 0-0 draw] but otherwise we've had more of the ball and more chances.

"Mourinho's an attacking coach; what he's not is a kamikaze. He doesn't have us playing like mad men.

"He likes the 'rest defence' but he's an attacking coach who gives players freedom.

"He's also honest, sincere, says what he thinks to your face. If a coach isn't honest, players rumble him. There's a very good relationship. Mourinho's very straight."

Herrera also refused to speak on ex-United coach, Louis van Gaal saying that he was grateful towards the Dutchman for bringing him to the club.

United next face Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday and will be looking to close the gap to the Gunners who sit two points off the top of the English Premiership table.
