Hammers handed Ayew boost

Cape Town - West Ham boss Slaven Bilic has confirmed that Ghana international Andre Ayew will return to training sooner than expected after sustaining a suspected thigh injury earlier in the season.

The Black Stars ace was rumoured to be out for four months after appearing to tear his thigh muscle during the Hammers' opening-day defeat to Chelsea.

Speaking to the media prior to his side's clash against West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Saturday, the former Croatia boss confirmed that Ayew won't need surgery and is recovering quicker than expected.

"[Diafra] Sakho and [Aaron] Cresswell will be back soon. Aaron is sprinting already and Ayew will be back sooner than what was expected," he said.

The news also provides a boost to the Ghana national team, after the 26-year-old was initially ruled out of his side's 2017 Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

Ayew, who is the Black Stars vice-captain, joined West Ham from Swansea on a three-year deal worth a reported £20.5 million during the off-season transfer window.
