Hammers close in on £30m Carvalho

Cape Town - West Ham United are close to signing Sporting Lisbon and Portugal midfielder William Carvalho, according to reports.

Portuguese media reported that the player is expected to travel to London on Monday ahead of an expected £30 million deal.

The Hammers have already had one bid of £27 million for Carvalho turned down.

The 25-year-old was a key player for Portugal when they won Euro 2016 in France last summer and is thought to want a move to the Premier League. He has previously been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United.

Carvalho was not named in Sporting’s squad for Tuesday's Champions League qualifier first-leg against Steaua Bucharest.

The Angolan-born player has made 137 appearances for the club in four seasons, scoring nine goals.

It is reported that he has a £30 million release clause in his contract, which still has three years to run.

Sporting recently signed midfielder Rodrigo Battaglia as a potential replacement should Carvalho leave.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
