Guardiola laments lack of focus

Cape Town - Pep Guardiola admitted to being concerned with the way his Manchester City side rested on their laurels in their 2-0 win over Sunderland on Sunday before the points were secured.

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring for the visitors at the Stadium of Light in the 42nd minute, with Leroy Sane adding a second on 59 minutes.

Guardiola felt his side took their foot off the gas too early, when they should have been searching for a third goal, although he did applaud the manner in which his side performed overall in the game.

He told Sky Sports after the match: "We misunderstood the last 35 minutes at 2-0 when we were in control. We forgot to attack and it can be so dangerous if they score a goal.

"You have to do that in the last 10 to 15 minutes, to rest with the ball - but we did it for longer.

"But the performance was so good and it's not easy playing every few days. Of course it's a good victory for us and we will keep going.

"We did it perfectly at Bournemouth in the last 10 or 15 minutes, but not 35. It's okay because the next time it's not going to happen.

"I saw many good things, a big congratulations on the performance and of course the three points."

Guardiola also had praise for Aguero, who has bounced back from his recent disappointment of seeing his place in the side taken by the now injured Gabriel Jesus.

"Sergio's goals are so important for us. He scored another one today and he helps us a lot in our build-up. Again it was brilliant, really brilliant," he concluded.

Guardiola will be hoping that his team can continue their impressive form when they face Stoke City on Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium.

Kick off is at 22:00.
