Gerrard: Liverpool still need Sturridge

London - Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard feels striker Daniel Sturridge should stay and fight for his place in Jurgen Klopp's starting XI despite calls for him to leave.

There is a growing belief among the football fraternity that Sturridge does not fit into Klopp's preferred style of play and his on-going troubles with injuries are not helping the situation.

With only five league starts all season, and Klopp preferring Roberto Firmino in a false nine role, the England international has looked increasingly frustrated on the sidelines.

Despite all his injury issues over the past 12 months, Gerrard feels his former teammate is still one of the best strikers in the league and if he remains at Anfield he can be a part of something special.

"He's capable of world-class moments and performances and I think Liverpool are on the verge of something really big under this manager," Gerrard said on BT Sport 2.

"That's the thing that Daniel's got to assess himself. Only he knows whether he's happy, whether he's frustrated or whether he wants to go somewhere else and challenge himself.

"But Liverpool aren't going to let him go for cheap. Liverpool need him. He scores goals when he plays, his minutes-to-goals ratio is incredible.

"I'm sure if someone came along with a huge, huge offer and Daniel wanted it there could be a solution there, but as it stands right now Liverpool need Daniel Sturridge and I can't see him going anywhere short term.

"He's capable of world-class moments and performances and I think Liverpool are on the verge of something really big under this manager.

"Maybe he is frustrated from week to week but there's a great chance he could get silverware with Liverpool in the near future.

"If I were him I'd be patient. I think there's good things on the horizon."

Sturridge will be looking to play from the start when Liverpool welcome Swansea City to Anfield in an English Premiership clash on Saturday.

Kick off is at 14:30.
