Gayle: We need to support Shelvey after red card

Cape Town - Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has emphasised the importance of supporting Jonjo Shelvey after his red card led to a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham.

The Magpies' opening Premier League game following their promotion from the Championship was evenly contested with Spurs until the 48th minute when Shelvey stamped on Dele Alli to earn a straight red card.

After the sending off Spurs took control with Alli putting them ahead in the 61st minute before Ben Davies made it 2-0 nine minutes later.

“It happens," Gayle told the Chronicle when asked about the red card.

“We need to stick together and not be digging anybody out.

“We know Jonjo is upset but he is going to be a big player for us and we are going to need him this season.

“It’s important we stick together in the next few weeks.”
