Garde sets Villa 10-match win target

London - Premier League bottom side Aston Villa need to win 10 matches to save themselves from relegation, manager Remi Garde said Tuesday.

The Frenchman has yet to guide his side to a single Premier League victory since taking over from the sacked Tim Sherwood six games ago.

Villa have not won since a 1-0 success over Bournemouth on the opening day of the season.

They are 10 points from safety having picked up just seven points from 17 matches.

And Garde said they have to start winning some of their remaining 21 league games.

"I think we need at least 10 victories. With 36 points you can be safe," he said.

"Sometimes you go down, sometimes with more points you can go down.

"Step by step we need to concentrate on the first win, then the second. We need to start very quickly that is for sure.

"We have seen the Norwich and Bournemouth victories against teams you never would have expected. You never know, maybe this is a year when you can win or lose against any team."

Villa host West Ham on Saturday, which means Garde's players will be training on the Christmas Day holiday.

"They will train in the morning and (then) stay with families," he added.

"They are adults, I'm okay for them to spend some Christmas time with family, you can find strength.

"Then the day after they can say, 'I had some lovely time now I want to win'."
