Downing urges Boro to avoid complacency

Cape Town - Stewart Downing has urged his Middlesbrough teammates to avoid complacency after a wonderful start on their return to the English top flight.

Boro were promoted alongside Burnley and Hull City this season, and followed up their credible draw at the Riverside against Stoke City in their opening game with an even more impressive performance - beating Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of light on Sunday.

Downing feels the performances are exciting and have boosted squad morale to new heights, but warns that everything can change in an instant in the Premier League.

"We were always confident behind closed doors that we had the squad," he told the club's official website. "You have seen the players coming in - they obviously believe in what we are doing. We have signed some big players and they are performing well.

"I feel confident we can do well, it's been proved in the two games that we can match it, but there's a long way to go yet. We have a lot of points to play for and we have to play like that every week. We will have tough times and it's how you come through them as well."

Downing, who's in his second stint with his boyhood club, has played 277 times in the Premier League - scoring 24 goals and registering 38 assists.
