Cape Town - Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has claimed he only spoke to twice to Jose Mourinho before he was sold by Chelsea.

De Bruyne, who is in the running for PFA Player of the Year this season, had his first taste of Premier League action with Chelsea in 2012 after arriving from Genk.

The midfielder was loaned out to Werder Bremen by Roberto Di Matteo and when he returned Mourinho was in charge at Stamford Bridge.

De Bruyne though made just three Premier League appearances under Mourinho for Chelsea before being sold to Wolfsburg for £18 million in January 2014.

And the Belgium midfielder has revealed he barely spoke to the Portuguese coach in six months after returning to Chelsea in July 2013 and there will be no emotional reunion on Saturday when City face Man Utd in the derby.

"I would say distant," De Bruyne told BBC’s Football Focus.

"I’m not really somebody who speaks a lot with coaches if a coach wants to speak with you, you do it. He is the boss, you can be good with each other but still there’s a distance between a coach and a player.

"I only spoke with him twice – when I wanted to leave to Dortmund and the second meeting [before the move to Wolfsburg] I said I need to go, I need to play football."

Manchester City welcome cross-town rivals Manchester United to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday with a win for the Blues sealing the Premier League title.

Kick-off is at 18:30 (SA time).
