Cape Town - Newcastle United club legend Andy Cole says the side have to spend money on players in the January transfer window if they are to survive relegation.

United started the Premier League season in poor form and only won their first match of the campaign last weekend as an Ayoze Perez strike helped the Magpies see off Watford last weekend.

Newcastle currently are one position about the relegation zone and are level on points with Huddersfield Town in 18th position in the standings.

Cole, who spent three seasons with the side from 1992 until 1995 and scored 68 goals in 85 appearances, told Sky Sports News: "If you don't invest, you are going to struggle. Whatever happens, in January they are going to have to invest.

"There are a lot of teams around Newcastle United at the moment - that could get see them get drawn into a relegation battle, and they don't want that."

When asked about how he feels the club are being managed by owner Mike Ashley, he replied: "It's different, that's all I can say on that really!

"From the outside looking in, (Rafael) Benitez did an unbelievable job last season and I think Newcastle ended up finishing 10th. However, you look at it, they superseded what they should have done.

"That's why this season they are struggling a little bit with no big investment, and like I said, you need to invest, you need to spend a little bit of money to try and propel the club forward."
