Chelsea's Zappacosta edges closer to season-long loan move with Roma

Cape Town - Chelsea right-back Davide Zappacosta is reportedly on the verge of joining Serie A outfit Roma on a season-long loan in a bid to gain some regular first-team minutes.

The Italian has not featured for Chelsea under Frank Lampard this season and appears to be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

He joined from Torino on deadline day in the summer transfer window of 2017 and went on to make 35 appearances in all competitions during his first season.

However, his game-time took a negative turn when Maurizio Sarri arrived as he only figured in four Premier League games, with most of his appearances coming in the club's victorious Europa League campaign.

With Cesar Azpilicueta the undisputed first choice at Chelsea, and impressive youngster Reece James knocking on the door, Lampard is prepared to allow the 27-year-old to leave in order to gain more regular football.

Roma are understood to be close to sealing a move for the 13-time capped Azzurri international as they want a natural right-back to ease the burden on converted midfielder Alessandro Florenzi.

Chelsea were keen for a permanent deal, but it appears Roma are only willing to offer a loan move with no obligation to buy.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
