Carragher expresses doubt over Liverpool's move for Timo Werner

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool could put plans to sign RB Leipzig star Timo Werner on hold due to the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Striker Werner has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield this summer, with both the player and Jurgen Klopp publicly revealing their admiration for each other in recent months.

Reports have indicated that Werner's preference remains to move to Liverpool or to stay at Leipzig for another season.

Although, according to Calciomercato, Werner has begun to consider interest from Inter, having previously discarded any thoughts about moving to the Italian top flight.

The report claims that "something has changed" with Werner's situation and the striker is beginning to have doubts about Liverpool's interest.

The Reds, who have been seriously keen on paying Werner's £52million release clause, are now wondering whether to retract their interest given the financial uncertainties surrounding the sport.

And Carragher has backed up that theory and thinks the financial uncertainty has meant that the club are now thinking twice over a multi-million deal.

"I think there was a good chance of it happening before the pandemic happened," Carragher told the Liverpool Echo at an NHS fundraising event.

"But financially now you don't know what state clubs are in. I actually saw something on Twitter before about Man United's financial results so, you would expect Liverpool to be pretty similar (as to) how they've been affected. I am sure that will affect the transfer market."

"I don't think Liverpool can complain too much with the squad they've got at the moment. They've lost one league game all season and one last season.

"There's certainly not too much that needs to change but I do feel a top attacking player is needed but if the finances aren't there, they aren't there."
