Cape Town - Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher on Monday apologised to Patrice Evra for how the club handled the Luis Suarez racism incident in 2011, admitting 'we made a massive mistake'.

The Liverpool team - then managed by Kenny Dalglish - showed their support for Suarez by donning T-shirts displaying his image and number in the warm-up before a clash against Wigan in that year.

This was despite the Uruguayan being found guilty of racism in a 1-1 draw at Anfield the previous October and receiving an eight-match ban.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football show, Carragher admitted that the club got it wrong in showing their support to Suarez and personally apologised to the Frenchman, who appeared as a guest on the show.

"There is no doubt that we made a massive mistake," Carragher said. "That was obvious. What I would say is that maybe I, as an individual, lacked the courage to say I wasn't wearing it.

"Apologies. We got it massively wrong."

Evra went on to describe his disappointment at Suarez refusing to shake his hand during the pre-match ritual in the subsequent fixture at Old Trafford.

"It was unbelievable all week. The people. Even my mum wanted to know whether I would shake his hand. It was like the handshake was more important than Manchester United versus Liverpool, a massive game. So that's why I was frustrated because I wanted people to focus on the game."
