Cape Town - The Football Association has announced that Chelsea have been unsuccessful in their bid to get John Terry's red card against Peterborough overturned.

The Blues captained was sent off in the 67th minute of his side's 4-1 win over Posh in the FA Cup third round on Sunday for bringing down Lee Angol as the striker raced through on goal.

The Premier League leaders contested referee Kevin Friend's decision on the grounds of wrongful dismissal, but the FA rejected their appeal on Tuesday.

Terry, who started his first game for Antonio Conte's side since October, will serve a one-match ban against Leicester on Saturday.

A statement from English football's governing body read: "John Terry will serve a one-match suspension with immediate effect after his wrongful dismissal claim was unsuccessful, following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing.

"The Chelsea defender was sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity during The Emirates FA Cup third round tie against Peterborough United on Sunday [8 January 2017]."
