Berbatov: It's a bit too early for Havertz to make Premier League move

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov reckons that Bayer Leverkusen star and Manchester City transfer target Kai Havertz is not yet ready for the Premier League.

The Sun report Man City are the newest club to join the race to sign Havertz with Pep Guardiola supposedly a big admirer of the 20-year-old.

Bundesliga outfit Leverkusen are demanding around £100m for the Germany international, who has 12 goals and eight assists this season, but the tabloid claim he could be available for around £70m due to the impact of the coronavirus on the market.

Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea and Bayern Munich are all interested in Havertz, but former Man Utd and Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov thinks the German should wait a bit longer before moving.

"I would like to see Havertz in the Premier League at some point, but not right now," he told Betfair. "I think it is a bit too early for him, I want to see him play more games, score more goals and get more confidence and maturity.

"I also think he will need a bit more muscle to play in the Premier League, we all know how defenders can squash you and smash you into pieces and you need to be ready for that if you are going to hit the ground running in such a demanding league.

"I think he should stay at Leverkusen and develop even more and get that experience which will help him for when the time comes to go somewhere else."

Meanwhile, Dietmar Hamann has hailed Havertz as an "exceptional" player who claimed he even reminded him of a "young Michael Ballack".

Former Germany star Ballack, who left Leverkusen for Bayern in 2002, thinks the player is developing nicely at Bayer and thinks a move to Bayern Munich may be a step too far too soon.

"Players with his quality are in demand everywhere, but I think he's in good hands in Leverkusen," the former midfielder told SportBild.
