Bayern waiting to pounce as Sane talks stall - report

Cape Town - Bayern Munich are keeping a close eye on Leroy Sane, with reports claiming the winger is no closer to agreeing on a new deal with Manchester City.

The City winger has made encouraging progress since he had successful surgery to repair a damaged anterior cruciate ligament.

Sane sustained the injury in the Community Shield victory over Liverpool at Wembley but City have still been able to compete without him.

Boss Pep Guardiola even hinted last week the Germany international could be back playing again before the end of January, with the forward already lifting weights in the gym.

Sane was courted throughout the summer by Bayern Munich and reports in his homeland continue to insist the Bundesliga giants will move in again when the 23-year-old has proved his fitness.

City were unimpressed by Bayern's attempts to unsettle the player during the last transfer window. Club chiefs told Bayern's board they would only sanction a deal if their bid was over £100 million.

Sane continues to delay contract talks, with City willing to offer him a five-year deal worth £180 000 a week.

Guardiola has made it clear just how much he rates the talented German, but sources close to the talks have stated no further headway is being made since his injury.

A potential exit in January would seem unlikely at this stage, especially as Sane may not have had any minutes to assuage any future fitness concerns Bayern would surely hold.

However, City could use the cash from the Sane sale to help their defensive woes, with centre-back Aymeric Laporte set to return after February, meaning Guardiola only has Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones to choose from, although the latter is now out for five weeks.

Sane has scored 25 goals in 89 league games for City but may struggle to dislodge some of City's forwards when he returns.

Raheem Sterling has already scored five goals this season, while Riyad Mahrez, David Silva and Bernardo Silva have made strong starts to the campaign.
