Cape Town - Ashley Barnes says he would like to spend the rest of his career at Burnley after signing a new contract which extends his stay until 2022.

The 30-year-old had 18 months left to run on his previous agreement with the Clarets but his form over the last 12 months has earned him a long-term extension.

The former Brighton and Plymouth striker netted 12 goals in the Premier League last season, his most productive campaign in the top-flight, and has followed that up with four strikes in 10 outings this term.

His flying start to the campaign even resulted in talk that he could be called up to the England squad for September's internationals, although he was eventually overlooked by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate.

Barnes has now been rewarded with a deal that runs until 2022, with the option of a further 12 months, which could potentially see him remain in Lancashire until he is 34.

The one-time Austria Under-20 international joined on a free transfer from Brighton in 2014 and says he can’t imagine himself playing anyway elsewhere.

"I'd like to see out my playing days here," Barnes told the club website. "At this moment in time I don't see anything else for me and I just want to continue playing at the highest level possible, and hopefully that is with Burnley.

"I just want to carry on playing and I want another contract after this."

Having been part of two successful promotion campaigns at Turf Moor, Barnes has adapted well to life in the top flight and is currently Burnley's record Premier League goalscorer having netted 36 times in 146 appearances.

Having started this season in excellent form, scoring four times in his first three appearances, the goals have dried up for the Bath-born striker of late.

Barnes' lack of goals has coincided with a dip in form for Sean Dyche's men, who head into Saturday's encounter with West Ham having lost their last three matches.
