Atletico chief: Costa nearing Madrid return

Cape Town - Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has revealed that Chelsea striker Diego Costa is close to returning to the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Costa joined Chelsea in July 2014 on a four-year deal worth £150,000 a week. His first season with the Blues was one to remember as he played an instrumental role as the Blues won their first Premier League title in five years, scoring 20 goals in 26 appearances.

Last season was a different story though as Costa only scored 12 goals in 28 appearances as Chelsea finished 10th.

The 27-year-old is reported to have grown tired of life in England, and Cerezo has admitted that he is doing everything in his power to bring the Spaniard back to Atletico.

“Diego Costa loves us, I admit it,” Cerezo told Gazzamercato. “We're talking with him and we're working to get him to return to Madrid and to play for Atletico Madrid next season. We're close to signing him.”

Atletico have also been linked with Serie A strikers Carlos Bacca, Mauro Icardi and Gonzalo Higuain, but Cerezo insisted that the La Liga club have no intention of signing any of the trio.

“Bacca is a very important player, but we're not going to buy him. He's not in our plans,” he said. “Neither will we sign any other striker from the Italian league. Not Higuain, nor any of the other names which are circulating.”
