Aston Villa swoop for Targett

Cape Town - Newly-promoted Premier League side Aston Villa have secured the signing of left-back Matt Targett from Southampton for £11 million.

The 23-year-old has left the club he spent 15 years with after signing for them as a schoolboy.

He spent time on loan at Fulham in 2018, helping them get promoted back to the Premier League before going back to Southampton for the start of last season.

He was largely in and out of the squad, swapping with Ryan Bertrand for the left wing-back position, and has now decided to leave for pastures new.

Targett is Villa’s fifth deal of the summer following the permanent signing of loan players Kortney Hause and Anwar El Ghazi, the free signing of Jota from Birmingham and the club-record swoop for Club Brugges striker Wesley Moraes.

Manager Dean Smith says Targett is the right kind of player for the club.

"We’re very pleased to have Matt join us.

"He’s a player we have been looking at for a considerable amount of time," Smith said.

"He fits our criteria of being a young player with experience of playing in the Premier League and having the potential to develop further.

"He will help make us a stronger defensive unit and we are all looking forward to working with him."
