Cape Town - Rafa Benitez will remain in charge of Newcastle next season after being promised a sizable war chest by owner Mike Ashley.

The former Liverpool boss invested in players in the off-season, but a lack of activity in January led Benitez to question his future at the club.

However, after securing promotion and the Championship title, Ashley has now pledged to invest heavily in the 57-year-old and his team ahead of their return to the Premier League.

Following a meeting between Ashley, managing director Lee Charnley, and Benitez, Ashley told the club's official website: "I’ve confirmed to Rafa and Lee that they can have every last penny that the club generates through promotion, player sales and other means in order to build for next season.”

A delighted Benitez added: “I’m pleased with how the meeting went and the positive approach we are all taking together to build on what we have started this season.

“There will be challenges ahead of course, the summer will not be easy, but the hard work has been going on for some time and we can now continue positively with the development of the squad ahead of the start of the new season.

"I wish fans an enjoyable summer!”
