Alderweireld could be out for 14 weeks

Cape Town - Key Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld could be sidelined for more than three months, if his injury troubles are worse than first feared.

Alderweireld sustained a hamstring problem during Tottenham’s win over Real Madrid last month, with the Premier League club originally estimating that the Belgian international would be back by the end of 2017.

However, the 28-year-old has given an update on his condition and given a pessimistic update on how long he could be on the treatment table.

“I have a serious muscle tear,” said Alderweireld.

“There's a big chance of recurrence. If the muscle tears off completely for instance, I would need surgery and it'll take 14 weeks to recover.

“That's why we try to see how we can treat the muscle. In two weeks I'll undergo a new scan.”

If Alderweireld manages to avoid surgery, then he could be back in action in January.

But with fellow centre-half Davinson Sanchez sent off at the weekend and Spurs looking defensively fragile over recent weeks, the news on Alderweireld will come as a blow to boss Mauricio Pochettino.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
