West Brom pick up first win

London - West Bromwich Albion picked up their first win of the season as they built on their recent draw at Fulham with a convincing 3-0 home win over Paulo Di Canio's Sunderland on Saturday.

WRAP: English Premiership

Former Sunderland striker Stephane Sessegnon did the damage with a right foot strike in the 20th minute before Liam Ridgewell added the second 14 minutes from time to ease Steve Clarke's men away from the relegation zone.

Morgan Amalfitano then scored in injury-time to wrap up an excellent afternoon's work for Clarke's men.

Sunderland remain bottom of the table with just one point from five outings and two behind Crystal Palace, who host Swansea on Sunday, and a further point behind Norwich, who slumped to a 1-0 home defeat against Aston Villa.

West Brom's record signing Sessegnon did the early damage after good work from Nicolas Anelka which allowed the Benin international to follow up and prod home after some sloppy goalkeeping from Keiren Westwood.

Ridgewell then made the result safe with 14 minutes remaining when he finished off a good move from on-loan Marseille midfielder Amalfitano and smashed home a loose ball.

The 28-year-old Nice native Amalfitano then grabbed his first goal for West Brom with an injury-time strike.
