Wenger eyes Brazilian star

Cape Town - Arsenal were lucky to come away with a point from Goodison Park on Saturday and manager Arsene Wenger believes his team would benefit greatly from the signing of Wolfsburg midfielder Luiz Gustavo.

According to the Mirror, Wenger sent scouts to keep an eye on the Brazilian World Cup star in their Bundesliga opener, a 2-1 defeat away to Bayern Munich.

Gunners striker Lukas Podolski, who has been linked with a move away from the Emirates before the transfer window closes at the end of the end, has been a target for Wolfsburg and could spark the chance of a player-plus-cash deal between the two clubs.

Wenger is desperate to strengthen his midfield and Gustavo could be the perfect player to do just that.

Arsenal nearly signed the 27-year-old last summer but Gustavo wanted assurance about playing regularly which Wenger could not give him.

Now, with Mikel Arteta out injured and Mathieu Flamini struggling with form, Wenger looks certain to step up his efforts to land Gustavo.
