United 'flop' on deadline day

Cape Town - It wasn't all good news for Manchester United and new coach David Moyes.

According to the BBC website, the reigning Premier League champions failed in their attempts to sign Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera and Everton full-back Leighton Baines before the deadline.

They were also left waiting on a deal for Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao which is yet to be confirmed.

Those disappointments followed United's failed pursuit of Barcelona playmaker Cesc Fabregas, while another target Thiago Alcantara moved to German champions Bayern Munich.

Manchester United signed Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini for £27.5m shortly before the transfer window closed.

United had made a joint bid of £28m for both Fellaini, 25, and full-back Leighton Baines in August, which the Toffees had described as "derisory".

United manager David Moyes said: "He is a player with great ability and strength and I think he will make a real difference to our squad."
