United dominate PFA awards

2009-04-14 15:31

Manchester - Cristiano Ronaldo is on course for a hat-trick of PFA Player of the Year awards after being included in the nominations released on Tuesday.

The Portuguese, who was voted World Footballer of the Year in January, is one of five Manchester United nominees, a reflection on a season that could end with Alex Ferguson's side collecting five trophies.

Central defensive partnership Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are in contention for the award voted for by their fellow professionals while Ryan Giggs and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar are also nominated.

The 35-year-old Giggs, who has never won the award, has been in sparkling form for United as they aim to add the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup to the Fifa Club World Cup and English League Cup trophies they have already won.

Dutchman Van der Sar managed a record 14 consecutive league clean sheets earlier this season.

Title-chasing Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who won the vote in 2006, completes the list of six.

The nominations for the Young Player of the Year feature a trio of young England internationals in Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Young and Tottenham Hotspur winner Aaron Lennon. Manchester United's Jonny Evans and Raphael and Manchester City's Stephen Ireland complete the list.

    Gerrard will win it...

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-15 08:41

sorry boet they try to stick to players who are helping their side to actually win a trophy!

  • nazeem - 2009-04-15 09:23

Like he thought he'd win last night's Champs league game.... :-)Hahaha.. So not!

  • Shaheen - 2009-04-15 12:23

In terms of performances as of late, I think Gerrard will get Player of the year. Although my vote would still go to Vidic. He's been a rock this season (apart from one blip).

if it boils down to helping their side to win trophies, then the award should go to one of your man u refs who helped you win many games. gerrard deseves this award. the only man u player that should get it is giggs but this is only because of his history not form this year. let's call it a going way present.

Why can't they give the chance to Ryan Giggs.....the guy is inform this season serious.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-15 16:05

ANON@ 1.44PM ---- thats the way it works my friend! the player is also judged on his teams performance and trophy wins! Gerard cant win it cos his team is too consistent at winning absolutely NOTHING!!!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-16 08:52

This has to go to Gerrard, there's no doubt!!! He is by far the most complete player in the world right now!!!!

  • mikhail - 2009-04-16 10:33

van der sar should win it as his performances have really enabled united to dominate everything

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-16 12:11

anon 8.52am Ronaldo will win it..... even Thierry Henry said it himself '' Gerard,Messi and Torres cant compete cos their teams have to at least have some silverware''! ronaldo has helped united win the league , champs league and world club champs dont be biased give it to the man who deserves it! and Gerard is not such a complete player i have to still see him score a good header!!!

  • THE SCOUSER - 2009-04-16 15:13

Anonymous User 4/16/2009 12:11 PM- well then i guess you didnt watch the champions league final 2005, THE FIRST OF 3 GOALS....... pls boet gerrard is a legand....

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-16 17:05

Anon User 12.11, Ronaldo cant get it,he's good, dont get me wrong, and he scored a great goal last night, but, looking at his standards, he hasn't been half the player he was last season!!, Gerrard can use his head, a good example of this was on our way to victory in 2005 against AC Milan!!! I dont think i'm being biased in any way when i say he's had a brilliant season and if he were to win, it would be deserved!!! I dont think silverware comes into play here!!

  • Kevin J Govender - 2009-04-16 17:48

Gerrard is the most complete player for Liverfool , not in the world , without him Liverfoo would be fighting relegation

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-17 10:13

Gerrard is the only worthy candidate on that list. Fighting relagation - RIGHT ! That's why 'Pool have done so well this season even tho' he has been injured quite a bit ? Had Stevie & Torres NOT been injured so regularly, 'Pool would already be champs this year

anon user 5.05! its the Player of the year award (ie:2009) no one cares about wat happened in 2005 when Gerard scored his last header!!! stop living in the past guys!!! Ronaldo definitely deserves it for the influence he has had on Uniteds Trophy haul this season!!!

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-17 12:00

Stevie G will always be the best,WIN or LOOSE.He deserves to be a player of the DECADE,When will the top dawgs realise that? The MAN is very, very HOT

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-17 13:02

Hey, To anonymous user at 10:13 today, Thats the problem with Liverpool, because 2 player were injured they cant win a title. United have had there injuries, but guess what they still leading the league. Two players dont make a team, 11 players do. Thats the difference between Man U and Liverpool, we dont have 2 or 3 good player we have 20 to choose from. No Lame excuses for battling in the league.

  • Charles - 2009-04-17 13:38

Well from my personal point of view Liverpool ithout Gerrard is nothing. Its unfortunate to rely on a single player. Results must always come with or without a player. Of course one might have an influence however for a reasonable person to say we could have with Gerrard its so painfull. Man United is a team like any other however it is supercream. on top of everything. The top player is for Vidic he played his heart out. Viva Man United

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-17 15:48

Bru, Gerrard has scored goals with great headers. Where have you been for like the last 5 years? Like whatever, dude.

giggs deserves this award. he is a model professional, a great ambassador for the game and in serious from this season. other commentators have suggested gerrard. he is great but needs to play for a manager who has a better idea how to run a successful club. rafa is a bit of a lunatic who is a bit of a loose cannon with the press.

  • Anonymous User - 2009-04-20 09:18

'Pool are pushing ManUre all the way this year EVEN THOUGH Stevie G & El Nino have been injured alot this year - what's so hard to understand about that ? Players like Riera, Benayoun, Kuyt, Aurelio, etc have been scoring important goals this season & Alonso & Monster Masch are the best in their positions in the world. Reina has won the Golden Gloves the past 3 seasons. That's the problem with Utd fans - they THINK 'Pool are only 2 players, when infact their starting 11 is as good as anybody in the world. On the other hand, Utd suffer bigtime if Rooney & Ronaldo don't play

  • Charles. - 2009-04-23 11:32

The player usually comes from an English team that would have done exceptionally well , considering the fact that Man U are still in the run for the Champions league and with luck on their side where they are even winning premier league matches when they are not playing well they will certainly land the Championship. The player is coming from them and my choice is Giggs because he has defied against old age to be the best player on show at the team.
