Twitter had a good laugh at Stevie G's expense!

Cape Town - See how the Twittersphere reacted to THAT red card shown to Liverpool's outgoing captain and club legend, Steven Gerrard.

WATCH: Gerrard sent for (very) earlier shower against United

The 34-year-old midfielder was shown a straight red card, after being introduced into the contest just 43 seconds earlier, for a vicious stamp on Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera to end his participation in his last ever derby match against the Red Devils.

Here is how Twitter reacted to Gerrard's moment of madness:

Gerrard duly aplogised after the game saying: "I don't know what caused it. I don't know. Probably just a reaction to the initial tackle," before adding: "I shouldn't say more about it, really. I've just come out here to apologise to the dressing room and supporters.

"I need to accept it. The decision was right. I've let down my team-mates and the supporters. I take full responsibility." (Read the full article on Gerrard's apology HERE!)

His honest apology was praised by former Stoke City defender, Danny Higginbotham, and outspoken journalist, Piers Morgan.
